My name is Scott Toth. Several years ago, my mother-in-law, Darlene, became the victim of a scam that changed the way I looked at phone fraud forever. Out of respect for her, and because she is no longer with us, I keep her last name private.
Darlene was manipulated by a young man operating from Nigeria who described himself as a “Yahoo Boy.” By the time our family understood what was happening, approximately $10,000 had been taken from her.
For most families, that is where the story ends. The money disappears, and the person behind the scam vanishes into another country.
I was not willing to leave it there. I hired an investigator and traced him to Nigeria. I arranged to speak with him directly by phone. I wanted him to understand that Darlene was a real person with a family, and the money he took had consequences. I was able to recover a portion of the money.
